COWBOY JACK CLEMENT - “BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BANJO”
He’s spent most of his career behind the scenes, but the 80-year-old Clement is as rock & roll as it gets. He was an engineer and producer at Memphis’ legendary Sun Studio back in the ’50s, and discovered Jerry Lee Lewis while his boss Sam Phillips was out of town. Clement helmed the session for Lewis’ piano-thumping masterpiece “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” and went on to work with Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Paul McCartney, Bono and countless others. And he’s a top-notch singer, songwriter and musician, too. His mantra, “We’re in the fun business, and if we’re not having fun, we’re not doing our jobs,” is fully endorsed by 40 Nights of Rock & Roll.
